About this event

Advanced Navigation

The emphasis of this 2-day course will be learning to navigate on moderate, strenuous and technical routes where the compass is beneficial to determine the detailed direction of a path. The course will cover:

  • Measuring distance accurately on the map and estimating distance travelled on level terrain
  • Relocation techniques
  • Grid north, magnetic north and their relevance for navigation
  • Use of contour details such as aspects of slope, re-entrants, ridges or ring contours to navigate on un-pathed terrain
  • Use of map and compass to estimate the distance travelled on a bearing over varying terrain
  • Route planning on un-pathed terrain
  • Strategies for navigating on un-pathed terrain (e.g. aiming off; use of attack features; boxing; mental & physical catch features)
  • Strategies for navigating in poor visibility (e.g. inundated by cloud; whiteout; darkness)
  • Understanding of the benefits and limitations of digital mapping and GPS devices in un-pathed terrain

Both days will be spent outside and therefore please come prepared for rough walking, but no significant climbing is planned. This is autumn so remember the weather may be wet and windy; waterproofs and a warm layer are recommended. You will also need to bring a packed lunch and drinks. Please bring your compass.

Falkirk Community Trust fully complies with Scottish Government Coronavirus guidelines.

You will receive full details on booking.
