Event description

Description

Ever been on a run and not quite known where you are or even where you are headed? It is our aim to share the joy of moving around in the outdoors and being able to navigate accurately and practically enough to get to where you need to be, without making it too complicated. no-mad running have developed a 1 day introductory navigation course specifically aimed at those moving quickly over difficult terrain.

This 1 day course which will cover:

* Types of maps, scales, different Norths, grid references and describing where we are.

* Distances, directions and how to get back to a known point.

* Altitude, handrails, attack points and aiming off as ways to make navigating easier.

* Use of a compass to take and run on a bearing

* Practical session outdoors to apply your new skills!

We aim to mix the classroom with the outdoors, the venue gives us the opportunity to look at various navigation features.

Who is it for?

Any runners wanting to know about navigation, particularly focussing on events such as fell races, mountain marathons, orienteering and any other events that require land navigation skills. To get the most out of this course, you should have a sense of adventure and be happy moving for about 5km outdoors. We do work with all ages, under 18's must be with a parent. Please get in touch to discuss whether this is the right course for you or someone you are bringing.

How is the course run?

We mix classroom time and time outdoors to make sure that you understand what you're doing, and why irrespective of what the weather is doing. We do not run during the course, this is so that you can really see the features that we're looking at on the map, and that no-one is worried about their running pace.

Level: Beginner / Intermediate

Required equipment: Outdoor clothing including waterproofs, packed lunch.

Provided: We will loan OS maps and Silva compasses for the course. Tea/coffee and biscuits throughout the day, a light lunch of sandwiches and soup is provided - please let us know any dietary requirements when you book on the course.

What people have said on previous courses:

"I attended a great navigation training day with no-mad running which was excellent! Ash and Katie were very approachable and full of knowledge and experience of adventure and travel. They managed to communicate all this with ease, clarity and a sense of humour. The training included practical sessions which really made all the theory 'click' into place. As a beginner to map reading and known personally for having a terrible sense of direction I have found this course extremely useful and pitched at the correct level. I now feel empowered to explore the hills in a way I never have before -which is exactly what I wanted -resulting in a very satisfied customer. Thank you Ash and Katie." - Vicki Barlow

"Just had a great day course learning navigation with Ash and Katie. I now feel so much more confident and can't wait to get out and try my new found skills. Thank you both." - Linzi Cooper

"A Big Thanks to 'Ash and Kate' for the Brilliant 'Navigation for Runners Workshop'... we had such a good time! The day was put together really well, Ash was extremely experienced and so passionate about maps, mountains and navigation, he made it very clear and easy to for us to learn and take in so much! It was great to be surrounded by like minded athletes in such a beautiful part of the world too ... we all came away with Big Smiles, Feeling Confidant and Motivated! Can't wait to put it into practice ... with my mountain goat Lucy Ashley THANKS Again no-mad running for Sharing your Passion :) Loved it!" - Jean Ashley
