Description

One day can't make you an expert - but it will give you knowledge to then practice! You will work on problems individually or in pairs

This course will explain:

Map intro - scales, symbols
Gridding- system, grid references 4/6/8 figure
Contours and features
Grid bearings
Magnetic bearings and magnetic variation
The compass
We will then do practical map reading on a walk on Hawksworth/Ilkley Moor, finding linear features and walking routes at first, and then progressing to open-country bearings navigation.

What to wear - clothes suitable for the weather, including waterproofs if necessary, layers are best. You should bring your own lunch though tea and coffee etc will be provided.

This event is not insured and all activities are at your own risk with no liability accepted by the organiser. Activities are assessed as low risk - the usual walking type hazards e.g. twisted ankles, crossing roads etc and participants require no special training or preparation other than a very modest level of fitness.
