Conversation with Sofie Pelsmakers, Environmental Architect, Guest Lecturer and Author of The Environmental Design Pocketbook (http://www.environmentaldesignpocketbook.com/)
As part of our 2014 Programme focused on Inspiring Change, we will be launching our NAWIC Online Conversation Series. The Series will be focused on presenting a different face of the construction industry through the experiences of those who work within it realm.
"Originally from Belgium, Sofie is a chartered architect with over a decade of experience in building and teaching sustainable architecture. She is particularly passionate about bridging the information gap between environmental research and knowledge and its application in design and building practice.
As such, she co-founded Architecture for Change (AfC), a not-for-profit environmental building organisation, with Stephen Choi, with the aim to change and challenge the way we currently design and build. Publication of ‘The Environmental Design Pocketbook’ also fits in with these aims. It distills environmental science, legislation and guidance into one easy to use single source and has received commendation by the RIBA for ‘Outstanding Practice-located Research’(2012).
In January 2013, Sofie was listed among 12 'Women influencing Sustainable Architecture' in the UK by the Architects Journal and 'Highly Commended' for the UKGBC/PRP 'Rising Star award' 2013, as well as ranked in the top 10 of BDtwitter100 and BD's Sustainability twitter100 and and was listed a 1 of 13 Stars of Building Science in Building 4 Change's Virtual Academy of Excellence (Sept 2013). When & Where
NAWIC London & South East
"In a multicultural society where the communities we design for and the client bodies we design with are diverse, so should be our teams."
Founded in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1955, the National Association of Women in Construction is one of the world's longest running organisations for women working in construction. Run entirely by volunteers, NAWIC UK and Ireland is a diverse Not-For-Profit Association founded in 2003, after signing an international affiliation agreement.
As an organisation, we are committed to encouraging individuals to pursue, establish and sustain successful careers in the Construction Industry by creating opportunities to access inside knowledge, share best practice, develop personal and professional skills and to grow professional networks.
Our members are individuals working in an industry they feel passionate about. They thrive in diverse environments and enjoy working as a team in the shaping of the built environment.
- A shift of focus from gender to ability.
- Levelling the playing field in the industry.
- Ending of stereotypes
