Join the Faculty of Biology Medicine and Health (FBMH) for our flagship International Women's Day event with Nazir Afzal OBE, University Chancellor, who will share insights and reflections around gender equity.

The IWD 2023 #EmbraceEquity campaign theme seeks to get the world talking about why “equal opportunities are no longer enough” – and can in fact be exclusionary, rather than inclusive. Instead, gender equity is more desirable. Equity involves giving everyone what they need to be successful, it is not giving everyone the exact same thing.

Gender struggles have historically been considered as a ‘women’s issue’, as women are the primary driver behind gender equality strategies and campaigns. However, forging gender equity isn’t limited to women solely fighting the good fight. Allies are incredibly important for the social, economic, cultural, and political advancement of women.

It is important that we collectively embrace equity to allow us to achieve true gender equality in all aspects of education, work, and health.

Nazir Afzal OBE rose to national prominence with some of the UK's highest-profile prosecutions as Chief Crown Prosecutor for NW England and formerly Director in London. His prosecutions of the Rochdale 'grooming gang' and the former TV presenter Stuart Hall, amongst hundreds of others were ground-breaking and changed the landscape of child protection.

Nazir said it is vital we address misogyny, "the root cause" of violence against women.“We want to make sure that we understand this is not an issue about women's safety. There's an issue about male violence and that's what we need to address.” Source: ITV News

Join Dr Elizabeth (Beth) Micakovic, Director of Faculty Operations; Dr Natalie Gardiner, FBMH Associate Dean for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion; and Dr Rachel Cowen, University Academic Lead for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (Gender and Sexual Orientation Equality) as they welcome Nazir to speak at our annual International Women’s Day event.
