About this event

Independent researchers shape culture, knowledge, and society in countless ways—but too often without recognition or support. The NCACE Independent Researchers Network (IRN) hopes to change that.

The IRN is open to anyone pursuing research outside traditional structures, including:

  • Artists developing new creative knowledge.
  • Academics working independently or between contracts.
  • Community organisers and citizen researchers driving social change.
  • Cultural workers and practitioners bridging sectors and disciplines.

At this launch event, you’ll:

  • Connect with peers across arts, academia, culture, and community research.
  • Help shape a new national network designed to recognise and support independent researchers in all their diversity.
  • Receive information on the Pilot NCACE Associate Scheme launching shortly after the meeting

Speakers include:

  • Yasmin Khan, Director, Individual Practitioners and London (Visuals Arts and Museums) Arts Council England
  • Alice Bell, The Young Foundation / Freelancer
  • Representation from UKRI Public Engagement (name tbc)

Through workshops, publications, and new frameworks for research recognition, the IRN aims to provide the visibility, tools, and community independent researchers need to thrive—while linking them into wider national conversations on research culture.

If you’re an independent researcher seeking connection, recognition, and enhanced impact for your work, this is your network.
