NCATS HARMFUL SEXUAL BEHAVIOUR SEMINARS
NCATS will be delivering a series of monthly seminars aimed at front line social care and health care staff and teachers aimed at increasing their understanding of sexualised behaviour among children and young people, through exploring a range of behaviours encountered, possible drivers and precipitants of the behaviours, and other aspects of harmful sexual behaivour (HSB) in general. These seminars are timed to coincide with the NICE guidance around HSB, to promote good practice and to disseminate information about the subject and also the service
The seminars will be limited in number, to allow practitioners to focus on what is being delivered, and feel confident asking questions and discussing issues. Cases will be presented in an anonymised format to help bring the issues alive for participants. There will be some albeit limited opportunity to discuss cases brought by participants. Confidentiality will be respected.
Each seminar can be attended on an individual basis, although participants are welcome to attend more than one if they so wish.
The seminars will be 1 ½ hours in length, commencing sharply at 4.00 pm, and finishing by 5.30 pm. The seminars will be take place on the first Thursday of each month and will cover the following topics:
Date: 6th October 2016
Seminar Title: He ways he was only mucking about, but I’m not so sure
Participants will learn about normal sexual development and behaviour; understanding inappropriate sexual behaviour and the boundary with Harmful Sexual Behaviour
Date: 3rd November 2016
Seminar Title: He must have been abused sometime
Participants will learn about the role of previous experiences and the various drivers to Harmful Sexual Behaviour (HSB) and what factors lead a young person to behave inappropriately.
Date: 1st December 2016
Seminar Title: He says he won’t do it again-can he be trusted?
Participants will learn about the various trajectories associated with the different presentations; discussion regarding prognosis

Seminar Title: He’s autistic-they’re all like that
Participants will learn about the different neurodevelopmental disorders and Harmful Sexual Behaviour; what makes a particular diagnosis a risk factor

Seminar Title: It’s normal for siblings to explore each other, isn’t it?
Participants will learn about the particular risk factors and outcomes associated with sibling and Harmful Sexual Behaviour (HSB), including options around separation and treatment as well as working with parents/primary carer

Seminar Title: How to work with the system
Participants will learn about how to think systemically about Harmful Sexual Behaviour (HSB), including working with foster parents and schools

Participants will develop an increased understanding of the internet, Social media, young people and sexual behaviour

Seminar Title: How do we change things for them?
Participants will increase their understanding of treatment options for Children and Young People presenting with Harmful Sexual Behaviour (HSB) and inappropriate behaviour working with parents.

Seminar Title: Working with the system around Harmful Sexual Behaviour (HSB) and the impact upon professionals
Participants will learn about systemic working around young people presenting with Harmful Sexual Behaviour, and also have the opportunity to think about the impact of this kind of work.
