Event description

Description

This two-day walk on the section of the North Downs Way from Canterbury to Dover will give the participants an opportunity to experience a historic journey. For centuries, Dover has received travellers arriving from the continent, as evidenced by local archaeology dating back to the bronze age. Starting the walk at the official plaque of the NDW on the seafront in Dover, there will be a short visit of some of Dover’s historic sites, including the Roman Painted House, The Maison Dieu pilgrim hospital and St. Edmund’s chapel. After some light refreshment, we will begin the climb out of Dover into the Kentish countryside. We will stop at Whitfield church for lunch (please bring a packed lunch). The route will take us along a Roman road, through the lovely Waldershare estate and village of Coldred up to Shepherdswell village, where the walk will conclude for the day. Simple accommodation will be provided by St. Andrews Church. The Bell pub across from the church offers a warm atmosphere and a good selection of refreshment for thirsty walkers. A communal meal will be served that evening.

On Sunday morning we will start early with a light breakfast of tea, coffee and pastries at St. Andrew’s. We will visit the churches of Womenswold and Patrixbourne for a short talk on their history and architecture on the way to Canterbury. Arriving early afternoon in Canterbury (est. 1pm), we shall stop at each of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of St. Martin’s Church, St. Augstine’s Abbey and finally, Canterbury Cathedral where the walk shall conclude. After independent tours of the Cathedral and city, walkers can meet up at the Foundry Pub for a local brew.

Any funds, if any, raised after expenses will be donated to Bewsborough Parish for future walking events and equipment to support pilgrimage and pilgrims throughout the Parish.

No dogs overnight on the two day walk. Well behaved dogs are welcome on the day walks. Please seach for the day events, or contact us directly for more information.
