The Marine Stewardship Council invites you to attend a one-day symposium bringing together experts across science, management and the supply chain to support the adoption of long-term management plans which are critical for securing the future health of the North East Atlantic (NEA) pelagic stocks of mackerel, blue whiting and Atlanto-scandian herring.

The Symposium will be held at the prestigious Watermen’s Hall in London on Wednesday 21st June from 10am to 4pm BST. For those unable to attend in person, we are pleased to offer an online option via Zoom. Following the Symposium, attendees are welcome to attend a drinks reception from 4pm to 5pm BST, which will provide an opportunity for networking and further discussions. Both the venue and drinks reception are generously provided by The Fishmongers' Company.

Introduction

The North East Atlantic (NEA) is home to highly dynamic, data-rich fisheries where nations rely on healthy, sustainable fish stocks to help foster thriving coastal communities and seafood businesses. However, ineffective management of some of the area’s key pelagic stocks has led to unilateral quota-setting that - when combined - exceeds the scientifically advised Total Allowable Catch (TAC) for these species.

The NEA Pelagic Stakeholder Symposium aims to address this management gap by bringing together expertise across key areas of science, management, and markets. It will be an engaging, stakeholder-centred event that seeks to deepen participants’ understanding about international fisheries management in the context of the NEA pelagic stocks.
