You're Invited: A Special Visit to the Needham Research InstitutePart of SACU's 60th Anniversary Celebrations

We are delighted to invite SACU members to a unique event in Cambridge, hosted by the Needham Research Institute (NRI) as part of our 60th anniversary celebrations. The NRI has generously opened its doors to coincide with a special SACU Council meeting, and we are pleased to extend this opportunity to all members.

This is a rare chance to explore the legacy of Joseph Needham, who not only founded the NRI but also established SACU in 1965. Join us for an afternoon of discovery, conversation, and connection with fellow members and SACU Council.

🗺️ The Afternoon Includes:

  • A guided tour of the Needham Research Institute – home to an extraordinary collection of research on Chinese science, technology, and civilisation.
  • A walking tour tracing the life and legacy of Joseph Needham, including a visit to Gonville and Caius College, where he was Fellow and later Master.
  • An opportunity to meet SACU Council members in person to share ideas and help shape SACU’s activities for the next five years.

About Joseph Needham

Joseph Needham was a pioneering British biochemist, historian, and sinologist, best known for his monumental series Science and Civilisation in China. His scholarship transformed global understanding of Chinese innovation and scientific achievement.

As founder of both the Needham Research Institute and SACU, his legacy continues to inspire our mission to foster understanding between the UK and China.
