About Maggie’s

Maggie’s is a charity that provides free cancer support and information in centres across the UK and online.

In 1996, we created a place for anyone who is living with cancer and their family and friends, in the grounds of an NHS hospital in Edinburgh. We named the centre after our inspirational founder, Maggie.

Maggie lived with advanced cancer for two years and used her experiences to create a blueprint for a new type of care. Her belief that “above all, what matters is not to lose the joy of living in the fear of dying” has informed everything at our centres, from the beautiful architecture and choice of artwork to the relaxed, welcoming layouts and our warm friendly approach.

Today you will find Maggie’s across the UK and even abroad. Each of our 24 centres is staffed by an expert team, including support specialists, psychologists and benefits advisors. They are places to find practical advice about benefits and eating well; for emotional support; to share experiences with others in a similar situation around the kitchen table or in our online community; or just to sit quietly with a cup of tea.

Our unique programme of support has been shown to strengthen the physical and emotional wellbeing of people living with cancer and their family and friends.

“Maggie's provided me with a refuge - a sanctuary - part of the real world but somehow detached. The world hadn't changed but cancer had totally changed who I was and I needed help to learn how to live again.”
