The day will begin with an overview of these three countries and why these developing regions are so important.

NEPAL
The section on Nepal will discuss the history of the country’s tea industry and the problems it has faced in the last 50 years. We will discuss the different growing regions (altitudes, topography, seasonal changes, etc) and the sort if teas produced in each. We will taste a selection of traditional First Flush teas which have similarities to First Flush Darjeelings but are often better in quality and profile. We will taste second flush, monsoon and autumnal Nepali teas and compere them in terms of differences in the weather etc. Then we will talk about the speciality black, green, oolong and white teas being made in some of the factories and taste a selection. We will also discuss how Nepali teas reach the market, and some of the companies who are selling them to help support this important industry and get money back to the smallholder growers and factories.

VIETNAM
Vietnam’s tea industry has a long but disrupted history. We will trace its history back 2000 years , the influence of the French during colonial days, the collapse of the market because of 20th century wars, and the revival of the industry since the late 1970s. We will discuss the different growing regions, the sort of plants that grow there, and the type of teas made. We will taste a selection of green, oolong and flavoured teas from the different regions. We will also discuss the route to market for Vietnamese teas and how to buy the teas that are of interest.
