Description

Join Guardian writer Nesrine Malik as she talks to Guardian editor-at-large Gary Younge about her new book, We Need New Stories.

In this vital book, Malik guides the reader through the dangerous myths that are maintaining the status quo. She argues that these myths, be it of sexual liberation or of white non-identity, are at odds with the lived experience and in urgent need of revision. Do women mistake access for arrival? Is whiteness an identity with barriers to entry?

As populist leaders’ rhetoric return us to the bigotry of yesteryear, the risk of it being normalised weighs heavy. The old frames of reference are not working, the narratives used for decades to stave off progessive causes are in danger of being exposed as fakes. Malik and Younge will explore the need to find new narrators whose stories can fill the void and unite us behind a shared progressive vision.

Standard tickets for this event are £20, or £33 with a copy of We Need New Stories (RRP £16.99).
