About this event

In 2016, the UK ratified the Paris Climate Agreement, which commits world leaders to keeping global warming below 2 degrees. In 2019, the UK became the first major economy to pass a net-zero emissions law, with a 2050 target. In 2020, as the government focusses on the pandemic response and the economic crisis, how can the UK ensure it is upholding its pledges under the Paris Agreement? What is getting in the way of political commitment to moving to a clean energy economy? Current commitments are way below what the UK needs to meet the challenges of the climate crisis. Will market signals be strong enough to bring about a timely clean energy transition or does the UK government need to become more interventionist? And is the UK’s two—party system itself a challenge to ensuring this issue is tops of the political agenda?

In this week-long online event, NS Spotlight and Energy Monitor will bring together sector leaders, experts and policymakers to discuss what the challenges and opportunities for the UK meeting these ambitious targets, through digital panels, live Q&As, and interviews.

Spotlight is the New Statesman’s award-winning series of highly focused policy reports. Each edition asks parliamentarians, academics, business leaders and experts to shed light on a range of policy areas – from energy and climate change, to healthcare and education, to cyber security and economic development.

With unique data, deep-dive articles, interviews and opinions, Energy Monitor tells business leaders and policy makers what they need to know about the transition to a clean energy economy.
