Event description

Description

A one-day course for trainees and consultants wishing to gain confidence in the investigation and management of patients with neuroendocrine tumours in a multidisciplinary setting.

The course, organised by UKINETS and delivered by the Faculty, leads to CPD accreditation from the Royal College of Physicians (8 credits).

Pre-course reading will be distributed approximitely 2 weeks in advance.

NETs Basics: Summary of the course

You may be new to NETS or you may already have some experience. This can seem a complicated and daunting area, particularly as it relies on understanding something about how other specialties work and think as well as your own. This one-day course includes some precourse reading which is designed to help set the scene and to create a structure for the didactic parts of the day. The day itself involves some lectures and discussions in the morning and in the small-group ‘mock MDT’ work in the afternoon. The course is suitable for anyone starting out in looking after patients with neuroendocrine tumours, from any part of the multidisciplinary team.

Aims

The aims of the NETs Basics day are to help participants with the following skills:

1. To feel confident to plan outpatient care and initial investigations for a patient with a NET

2. To be able to present the patient to the NET MDT including awareness of terminology

3. To independently manage side effects of carcinoid syndrome and commonly used treatments for NET tumours

Learning outcomes

By the end of this teaching day attendees should be able to:

- Describe the pathology and presentation of NETs

- Feel more confident to plan initial investigations and care for a patient with suspected NET

- Present a patient to the NET MDT including demonstrating awareness of terminology

- Suggest suitable management for symptoms of carcinoid syndrome

- Explain to a patient the commonly used treatments for neuroendocrine tumours
