Description

Network visualization with Gephi for beginners

Andrew Salway will be running this free workshop, aimed at researchers who want to learn how to visualize network data. We'll be using Gephi, which is free to download and is “the leading visualization and exploration software for all kinds of graphs and networks.”

The workshop will cover all the basics: the use of layout algorithms, resizing and colouring nodes and links according to desired parameters, plus a little network statistics (e.g. for community detection). Our running example will be a tweet dataset distributed by Twitter in October 2018, thought to show Russian and Iranian disinformation operations. However, the techniques you'll learn are relevant for visualizing diverse kinds of network data.

Who is this for?

The workshop is open to everybody. No prior experience with Gephi or network visualization will be assumed. Participants from outside of the University of Sussex are also welcome.

What must I bring?

You'll need a laptop with Gephi installed. Help with installation will be available prior to the workshop (you can come along from 2pm). Some spare laptops may also be available for loan. The sample data files will also be made available for download nearer the time.
