Description

Purpose

An event hosted by Arts 4 Dementia (A4D) and Dementia Pathfinders (DP) to support arts practitioners and workshop leaders who have some experience in working with early stage dementia. The event aims to advance their practice, bringing together examples of best practice and offering an opportunity to network, share their experience and learn from others.

The event will be chaired by DP trainer Aubrey Maasdorp.

Suitable for

Arts facilitators, workshop leaders, animateurs, volunteers and postgraduate arts students, who have worked with people living with dementia, including those who have taken A4D Early Stage Dementia Awareness Training.

10.30 Welcome - Nigel Franklin, Chief Executive, A4D

Speakers:

  • Guest Speaker - Polly Wright, theatre director, performer, facilitator, writer, lecturer, and founder and artistic director of The Hearth Centre.
    Hearth was set up in 2003 as a centre for Health, Education and the Humanities with Art at the Heart, using the arts to animate key issues in mental health, social care and the humanities and to promote well being. Polly co-founded Women and Theatre in Birmingham, where she co-wrote and performed many cabaret sketches and plays. Since setting up Hearth she has written and produced eight plays on mental health. Polly has taught in secondary schools and is a part time lecturer in Clinical Communication Studies and Literature and Drama in Medicine at Birmingham University. She has an MSc in Health Promotion and has been commissioned to write studies in which drama was used as a method of social research into service provision and health perceptions. She has published articles on the approach and is on the editorial board of the Arts and Health journal, Policy and Practice.
  • Barbara Stephens - Chief Executive, Dementia Pathfinders.
    Inspired by personal experiences with dementia, Barbara Stephens has committed to supporting people living with dementias and their families throughout her life and career. Dementia Pathfinders is a social enterprise committed to delivering education, learning, support and care for people living with, and supporting, dementia. Barbara is also a Caregiver-in-Chief at Unforgettable.

  • Lori Hayden - A4D Trustee and family carer.
    After a successful career running her own public relations agency, Lori retired to care for her husband John, following his diagnosis of a rare form of Alzheimer's Posterior Cortex Atrophy. A passionate believer in the value of arts for people living with dementia, Lori speaks of her own experience with John.


Roundtable discussions:

  • Finding new ideas/refreshing programmes
  • Sustainability and funding
  • Finding participants for programmes/linking with local service providers
  • Referrals and social prescribing

LUNCH


Creative Arts Workshops

(2 sessions each of 1 hour to enable participants to attend two preferred options. You will be asked for your preferences when you register for the event.)

  • Music

We will arrange sessions to enable as may participants as possible to attend their preferred choices.

We reserve the right to take video and/or still photographs of participants which may be used in Arts 4 Dementia and Park Theatre publicity material.

Refunds
Arts 4 Dementia and Dementia Pathfinders are not able to offer refunds to delegates unable to attend. A delegate unable to attend may appoint a replacement delegate by advising the name, organisation represented and email address of the replacement by email to admin@arts4dementia.org.uk before the start of the event.

GETTING THERE

Park Theatre is around a 4 minute walk from Finsbury Park station (Station Place exit).

Please note that the Wells Terrace exit from Finsbury Park Station is now closed for the foreseeable future. To reach us you will need to come out of the Station Place exit, turn left under the bridge on Stroud Green Road, then take the second left into Morris Place. Park Theatre is at the end of Morris Place. Please allow an extra 4 minutes for your journey.

There is some street parking in the area but as it's metered availability can be limited.

Parking restrictions in the immediate area: Pay & Display Monday – Saturday 8.30am – 6.30pm. Maximum stay is 2 hours.

Parking restrictions on Arsenal football match days:

Monday – Friday 6.30pm - 8.30pm

Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays - 12 noon to 4.30pm
