Description

Friday, 26th February 2016, 7.30-10pm. Tickets £10 SOLD OUT
Scottish National Portrait Gallery

'Scotland's favourite avant-garde noisemakers, Neu! Reekie!, dismantle the structures and snobberies dividing high and low art - art is for everyone' (The Skinny). Going into their sixth year of programming in 2016, Neu! Reekie! present 'a wonderful world of progressive cultural verve' (The List); using poetry, music, performance and film, they'll be riffing on a Jamaican theme with strident Scottish undertones.

Updated line-up:

Sadly due to illness Rachel Sermanni can no longer be with us.

We’re delighted to have Brina join the line-up...

Brina
Brina is the voice of World Roots Reggae Music from Jamaica, an artiste steeped in the sounds and rhythms of her Jamaican culture. With the release of her incredible debut album “Under One Sun”, Brina is ready to share her music with the world.

Jean 'Binta' Breeze
Jean 'Binta' Breeze MBE is an internationally renowned Jamaican poet. Her new poetry collection The Verandah Poems is published in March 2016 by Bloodaxe. She is recognised as the first woman to write and perform dub poetry and is a pioneering figure.
‘Jean “Binta” Breeze invites a Caribbean comparison with Maya Angelou, except that her range is broader still. Her poetry shifts effortlessly through standard English to a native Jamaican which has no equal in its emotional depth.’ Alexander Linklater, The Herald

Salena Godden
Selena writes and performs poetry, fiction, memoirs, radio drama and lyrics. With regular TV and radio appearances Godden also hosts and produces The Book Club Boutique and is constantly exploring her Jamaican heritage.
'The doyenne of the spoken word scene' - Ian McMillan ‘The Verb’ BBC Radio 3
'The Mae West madam of the salon' - The Sunday Times
'Salena is redolent of a young Chet Baker, and that’s not as easy as she makes it seem' - John Cooper Clarke

Freeschool Sound
the premiere of a mighty new project between rapper and MC (Jamaican born) Daddy Scotty and Producer Bob (who's work together on Project Bona Fide still rings out on the streets of Edinburgh). See: http://bit.ly/20QhXhd
