Neurodiversity in the library
Overview
Outline
In this two-hour session we will first talk briefly about terminology, outlining what neurodiversity and neurodivergence are and some preferred language around the area. We'll also look briefly at the likely representation of neurodivergence in the population, addressing populist claims around overdiagnosis and causation. We'll move onto ways in which some neurodivergent people, particularly autistics and ADHDers, might be seen as behaving deliberately "inappropriately", and environmental triggers within library settings that neurodivergent people may struggle with. We'll talk about stimming, meltdowns, shutdowns, communication preferences, and other aspects of neurodivergence that you might encounter in library settings.
Please note that neurodivergent people may have other co-existing conditions, including learning difficulties - this session will focus on aspects of neurodivergence rather than the broad range of potential co-morbities.
The session will include a short break near to the middle of the session. There will be optional, low risk interactivity during the session and attendees are free to have webcams on or off, whichever they are most comfortable with.
The trainer, Andy, is Autistic, ADHD and Dyspraxic. Amongst other things he is co-chair of NLISN (https://nlisn.org), the Neurodivergent Library and Information Staff Network. You can find him at https://playbrarian.uk or on Bluesky as @Playbrarian.uk
The session is free to staff at SWRLS member libraries. It will be recorded and available for three months to staff at SWRLS member organisations.
If you work at another library and would like to attend the training, the charge will be £50 - please email Shelley on coordinator1@swrls.org.uk if you'd like to sign up.
