Neurological Testing for Manual Therapists

This course forms part of Phase 3 of the Musculoskeletal Remedial and Exercise Therapy course.


Phase 3: Module 9: Neurological Testing for Manual Therapists

Overview

  • Anatomy of the Cervical and Lumbar Spine
  • Neuroanatomy of the upper and lower extremity
  • Neurological examination of the upper and lower extremities
  • This course builds on from the neuroanatomy in Phase 2

Pre-Course:

  • You will complete a worksheet that will introduce you to the neuroanatomy of the cervical and lumbar spine


During the morning session you will:

  • Learn in-depth anatomy for the Cervical region:
    • Cervical Spine Anatomy
    • Brachial Plexus
  • Neurological presentations
    • Upper Extremity Dermatomes and myotomes - What they are and how to test them
  • Upper Extremity Reflexes
    • What a reflex is and how to test it
    • What to look out for in clinic


During the afternoon session you will:

  • Learn in-depth anatomy for the Lumbar region:
    • Lumbar Spine Anatomy
    • Lumbar/Sacral Plexus
  • Neurological presentations
    • Lower Extremity Dermatomes and myotomes - What they are and how to test them
  • Lower Extremity Reflexes
    • What a reflex is and how to test it
  • Clinical Tests
    • Clinical tests (Including the sensitivity and specificity): Spurlings, Valsalva, Adsons, Babinksi, Upper and lower nerve tension tests (Neurodynamics)
    • Please note: This course does allow you to diagnose Musculoskeletal conditions - the intention is to make sure you can provide a thorough assessment so you may refer onwards to a healthcare practitioner
