Event description

Description

What do we see when we read scripture? What do we hear when scripture is read to us? Often, we skip on in our minds; the passage is familiar, so we know what’s coming. We look for the single message, the lesson, the implication for our Christian life. In Bible study groups we interrogate the passage like a comprehension exercise, we follow the leader through the complications of language translated, historical situations, different social relations. We are aware that there is great knowledge available on scripture, but we don’t often understand that we are the ones who are bringing it to the reading.

Run by Sue Richardson, Christian Aid’s Theological Education Adviser, this day is for anyone with an interest in reading the Bible afresh. Sue will introduce you to reading the Bible in ways that will bring your life and the histories of others into dialogue with one another. This kind of reading is intentionally transformative; it allows us to see our world anew, offer some critique and discern how to act to change it and ourselves.

As we experience and practice reading together we will identify the processes and skills that can enable us to read in this way with others and create relationships to help us look for the opportunities to do so.

Sue Richardson is Roman Catholic and has been inspired by the Popular Reading of the Bible as practised in Brazil, a country she knows well, and by the readings of poor communities in other parts of the South which resource a commitment to justice and peacebuilding. She has worked for Christian Aid for 33 years, first as a member of Regional staff and latterly focussing on work with those responsible for ministerial formation.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
