Introduction

The handover is a much neglected interface at the heart of every project. It’s a time when:

  • The project shifts from build to operate
  • The output (whether building, product, software or process) is handed over from the project team to the owner or operator
  • Everyone has a chance to judge what has been delivered
  • The project team take time to reflect on what they’ve learned from the process

So it is little wonder that it is fraught with risk. And yet we tend to neglect it. Conventional wisdom pushes the message that ‘if you’ve done your pre-work, your stakeholder engagement, your risk management and your project control and management properly, then your handover shouldn’t be worry.’

But this underplays the complexity of those processes and also the passage of time, which may well mean that the attitude of citizens to the whole undertaking has changed (let’s see what happens on 29th March 2019); the requirement for the project may have changed (how will we respond to Hinckley Point C, when it is delivered?); the forecasts and assumptions that underpinned the commercial aspects of the project may have been way off (think East Coast Mainline train service), the capacity of the project owner or operator to use the asset may never have been tested … the list goes on.

Major Projects Knowledge Hub Live: New Approaches to Project Handover

The Major Projects Knowledge Hub Live Webinar event on 31st July, run by the Major Projects Knowledge Hub in collaboration with the Chartered Association for Project Management and Bentley Systems, will allow you get under the bonnet of the process of project handover.

The speakers and their pitch

Our three speakers, UCL’s Professor Andrew Edkins, a member of Arup’s ORAT team (name to be announced) and Owen Anthony, Programme Manager at Sheffield Hallam University, will each share their experience and stories of great (or disastrous) handovers from one of three perspectives: the project owner, the contractor and the business-as-usual operator. Expert facilitator, Tom Taylor and our invited audience will then pick up the threads and the tensions between these stories and these relative perspectives, share their own insights and quiz the speakers.

What we hope you will get out of the session

We hope that the resulting, live, discussion will spark ideas and insights on the nature of project handover; the risks that lurk within it and the ways in which you might change your own approach and techniques you might adopt to turn the revolver from yourselves and aim for the target - a successful and sustainable adoption of the project and the benefits that can flow as a result.

Register now

Join us and an invited live audience at the Bentley Systems Academy via webinar for 90 minutes of unscripted and dynamic debate; your chance to ask the speakers or other experts in the room for advice on your own handover dilemmas and an engaging reflection on what should, in many ways, be the project manager’s medal ceremony but that all too often sees you or your stakeholders carted off injured and the project left fatally wounded.
