Description

New City Old City

How does Bath use development opportunities to create its future, without undermining the past?

Venue: Guildhall Banqueting Room, Bath

Date: Wednesday 29 November 2017

Time: 6.00 – 8.00pm

What are the jobs that Bath needs to create to diversify employment opportunities for our people? Ones that will retain more of the students graduating from our two world-class universities? We live in a stunning historic city. How do we build on Bath’s many assets, to attract more exciting, forward-thinking businesses to our city? How do we create work-places that people will thrive in?

Building on the recent Festival of the Future City events, the event will challenge a number of high profile design and economic experts to present approaches to creating new opportunities for Bath.

Paul Appleton - Partner Allies & Morrison, on quality urban design – providing places to work, live and play - and learning from their hugely successful regeneration of Kings Cross

Dr Jim Coleman - Head of Economics, BuroHappold on how the basis of competition between UK cities is changing, and what Bath, in collaboration with Bristol, can learn from elsewhere.

Piers Taylor - TV Presenter and Architect, Invisible Studios on how great building design can enhance quality of life for residents, employees and visitors.

Dr Amy Frost - Bath Preservation Trust will highlight how Bath needs to respect and enhance its remarkable historical buildings and setting, and develop new sites sympathetically.

Dr Nicholas Falk - Founder URBED on success stories from other historic cities, seeking to thrive in the modern world, whilst celebrating their heritage.

Chaired by Gavin Thompson, Happold Foundation

The event is produced and hosted by engineering consultants BuroHappold, with support from Creative Bath, Bath & North East Somerset Council, RIBA
