2-hour workshop exploring new directions in research on19th- and 20th century marital, sexual, and contraceptive advice literature in print.
About this event
Dr Sarah Jones (University of Bristol) and Phoebe Gill (University of Birmingham) are hosting a 2-hour workshop exploring new directions in research on 19th- and 20th-century marital, sexual, and contraceptive advice literature. Our definition of advice literature is broadly based on print culture: this could include sexual, marital, and contraceptive advice in the form of books, newspapers, magazines, and pamphlets.
The workshop will be held online via Zoom on Thursday 7th July 2022 from 3-5pm BST. The format will be a discussion based around the following question:
How can research into sexual, marital, and contraceptive advice in print culture push the boundaries of previous scholarship, and what new directions can we take our research in?
We will have an hour of short responses to this question from our invited speakers to start the workshop. Following this, we will use these interventions and provocations to open up a broader conversation with all attendees about novel research in this area. We will also be looking to take this discussion further and produce a journal special issue or similar in collaboration with contributors.
We are hoping this will be a lively and thought-provoking event that will motivate some exciting future work. If you would like to participate in the broader discussion, or even just listen, please sign up here.
We look forward to meeting with you all soon!
