Description

Course content: Understanding Historic Timber Framed Structures and Understanding Historic Roof Structures and Traditional Roof Coverings including thatch, tile, slate and lead. Identifying causes of failure and the selection of appropriate repair and conservation systems including traditional and modern materials and methods. This will also include an assessment of the infill panels and consideration of improving thermal performance. Identifying problems of decay including damp and insect attack. The selection of appropriate repair systems and a detailed consideration of fire mitigation systems for thatched roofs. This topic will also cover rainwater disposal systems.

Cost: There will be a fee of £20 per person to cover the cost of all refreshments for each individual course so for all five courses the cost is £100.

Time: Coffee will be available from 9am with a 9.30am start. The course will finish around 4pm.

Road: At Beaulieu Village, follow the brown and white tourist signs to Buckler's Hard.

Rail: Take the train to Brockenhurst. There is a taxi rank at the station. The cost of a journey to Buckler's Hard by taxi currently costs approximately £20.

Parking: There is plenty of free car parking available within the gravel car park at Buckler’s Hard.

Arrival: Upon arrival please make your way to the visitor entrance and follow the signs to the Shipwright School Classroom which is situated down The Hard on the right hand side.

Lunch: A light lunch and refreshments will be available on the day with a lunchbreak scheduled.

Dietary and Mobility Requirements: Please kindly provide us with any dietary or mobility requirements.

Equipment: Where applicable a site visit is proposed as part of the day for the historic masonry, timber framed structures and joinery courses. Please bring appropriate footwear and clothes for less than favourable weather. In addition if you are attending the lime mortars, renders and plasters and/or cob course please be aware that this will be an interactive day and an opportunity to get hands on. Therefore please bring along appropriate clothes and footwear to work in such an environment.

Cancellation policy

If it is necessary for you to cancel your booking for whatever reason, please inform us as soon as possible. Cancellation charges are applied in all cases as it is difficult to fill spaces made vacant by late cancellations. A full refund is given only if more than 3 weeks’ notice is given. See below for refund rates:

  • Over 3 weeks’ cancellation notice: Full refund
  • 2 -3 weeks cancellation notice: 50 % refund*
  • Less than 14 days cancellation notice: No refund*

*Unless we are able to fill your place at short notice, in which case a full refund will be given

Alternatively, a place may be held until the following year if the delegate wishes to attend the course in the following year. No refund will be given for non-attendance or if no prior cancellation is given.

The New Forest National Park Authority reserves the right to cancel or postpone any course up to the course date if insufficient bookings have been received. Places may also be held on these courses until an alternative date has been finalised.
