Event Details

Dogs have lived side by side with us for thousands of years. They have been our companions and they have served us - hunting game, guarding our property, and working beside us from farms to trenches.

This walk will take us through a range of historical sites of the New Forest but we’ll be concentrating on the changing roles and significance of dogs through the ages – a sort of Hounds History!

Dogs are welcome to bring well behaved owners on a lead with them.

New Forest National Park Authority

The New Forest National Park was designated in March 2005. Its unique landscape has been shaped over the centuries by grazing ponies, cattle and pigs which roam free. Majestic woodlands, rare heathland and a spectacular coastline provide fabulous opportunities for quiet recreation, enjoyment and discovery.

The New Forest National Park Authority has statutory purposes and socio-economic responsibilities as specified in the Environment Act of 1995:

  • To conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the area.
  • To promote opportunities for the understanding and enjoyment of the special qualities of the Park by the public.

Working in partnership with other organisations it is also the Authority's duty to seek to foster the economic and social well-being of the local communities within the National Park.
