A local council's plan to plant thousands of trees was resisted by environmentalists. The resulting 'compromise' was reduced mowing of riverside greenspaces. This talk charts some of the emerging habitats and growing biodiversity - together with continuing problems.
Ted Benton is an emeritus professor of sociology at the University of Essex. He has taught subjects such as social theory and environmental social science for more than forty years. He has had a particular interest in the relationships between the social and natural sciences. Alongside his work in philosophy and social theory, Ted is an active natural historian who has published well regarded works on insects. He has a particular interest in bees having published a number of works, including most recently the New Naturalist “Solitary Bees” with Nick Owen in 2023.Ted received the Stamford Raffles Award in 2007, a prize given by the Zoological Society of London to amateur or professional zoologists who have made distinguished contributions to zoology which are outside the scope of their professional activities.”
