At this critical juncture, the media has a critical role to play, informing public opinion and shaping the policy landscape. But despite growing interest in new economic ideas, traditional media outlets remain wedded to economic orthodoxy, and fail to grasp the magnitude of the global challenges we face. To spread new economic thinking, and expand the base of progressive movements, we need to engage strategically with new forms of digital multimedia. This panel explores what that means in practice.

Over the past several years digital platforms have become an integral infrastructure of media communications globally. Economic news and analysis is now primarily mediated through platforms, with an increasing emphasis on audio/visual production sites such via YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. This landscape is dominated by "alt-right" channels, with structural algorithmic conditions often acting as barriers to the spreading of progressive analysis. This panel will explore how we should think about and relate to platforms when communicating alternative economic ideas.

How do we equip our movements with the infrastructure necessary to amplify their message in an ever-changing digital landscape? What can we learn from existing media projects to build power both in front of and behind the microphone? On this panel we hear from those who have built alternative digital infrastructures, from resilient media operations to accessible technical training. What digital infrastructure does a new economy need, and how do we make the best use of it?

On this panel we will hear from a range of funding experts at the forefront of the fight for economic systems change. We will discuss where new media fits within the broader ecosystem of grassroots organisations, think tanks, and policymakers working to build a progressive economy – and explore models of success to inform longer term strategies.
