Taster event: Professor Michael Berkowitz, New perspectives on Jews and filmmaking during the Second World War in America and Britain

About this Event

The talk:

This talk, which includes segments from wartime movies, introduces new research on all varieties of photography and film in wartime America and Britain. Leo Rosten of Joys of Yiddish and The Education of Hyman Kaplan fame will be presented as a critical force in all US Second World War movies, applying the lessons of the film programmes in Britain and its empire for the benefit of America’s war aims.

Light refreshments will be served prior to the event.

The speaker, Professor Michael Berkowitz:

Professor Michael Berkowitz is Professor of Modern Jewish History at University College, London. His publications include Jews and Photography in Britain (2015) that reveals the remarkable extent to which British photography is a Jewish story, Western Jewry and the Zionist Project 1914–33 (2002) and The Jewish Self-Image: American and British Perspectives, 1881–1939 (2000). Berkowitz is the editor of Jewish Historical Studies: Transactions of the Jewish Historical Society of England. He has curated pop up exhibitions related to his work on Jews and photography and was academic advisor for the exhibition Ghetto Warriors: Minority Boxers in Britain at London’s Jewish Museum (2007). His current research includes Jews, photography, modernity and Washington’s secret Hollywood connection during the Second World War. Long-range projects are the development of a musical based on his photography research and an exhibition to accompany the Kaunas, European Capital of Culture festivities beginning in 2022.
