About this Event

Kick off 2021 in style with the first NEW SHOOTS online event of the year. SP co-founder Cath Le Couteur will be joined for a special online Q&A with Bafta nominated writer/director Francis Lee (God’s Own Country, Ammonite) and award winning sound designer Johnnie Burn (The Favourite, Under the Skin). The pair will discuss the director / sound designer relationship, how sound can help form the narrative and tone of a film, and reveal their top tips for indie filmmaking.

Having never trained at film school, West Yorkshire writer and director Francis Lee made a splash in 2017 with his debut feature God’s Own Country which was the most successful British debut film, both critically and commercially that year. The film premiered at Sundance where he won the World Cinema Directing Award. It went on to screen at festivals worldwide and gained theatrical distribution worldwide winning countless awards including Best Film, Best Debut Screenwriter, Best Actor, Best Sound at the British Independent Film Awards and a nomination for the BAFTA for Outstanding British Film.

Following the huge critical and box office success of God’s Own Country, Francis' second feature film, Ammonite, starring Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan, funded by BBC Films and BFI, was selected in Official Competition at Cannes, Telluride Film Festival and premiered at Toronto International Film Festival 2020. It is due for worldwide release in 2021.

Francis will be joined by multi-award winning sound designer Johnnie Burn. Johnnie started in commercials and went on to sound design and mixed many music videos working with icons including Madonna, Prince and David Bowie. In 2014 he spent a year mapping out the sound design for Jonathan Glazer’s extraordinary film Under the Skin. This ability to create highly detailed and realistic yet still filmic and emotionally spellbinding sound led him to meet director Yorgos Lanthimos in 2015 and to work on The Lobster, The Killing Of A Sacred Deer and The Academy Award winning The Favourite. Johnnie has also headed up sound with Rupert Sanders on Ghost In The Shell (2017), had great success with Trey Edward Shults’ Waves (2019), and most recently worked with Francis on Ammonite.

Join us for an in depth discussion about the ins and outs of filmmaking, and as always there will be a chance for you to ask your questions. We’ll also be announcing the overall winner of 2020’s NEW SHOOTS: FILMMAKERS Competition. Join in and make 2021 your year of creativity!

Please RSVP to confirm your place online. Attendees will be sent the private URL the morning of the Q&A.
