Event description

Description

For our spring NEW SHOOTS event, we’re very pleased to be welcoming BAFTA nominated director Toby MacDonald and writer Freddy Syborn, whose debut feature film Old Boys is in cinemas now. The film premiered at Edinburgh Film Festival and is currently nominated for a European Film Award.

The pair will be discussing everything you need to know about making a successful British indie- including how to make the leap from shorts to features, the collaborative process between writer and director, securing funding & distribution, the casting process and of course, how to write a good comedy.

Toby began his career with the BAFTA nominated short film Je T'aime John Wayne, which won the TCM prize for Best Short at the London International Film Festival, and screened at festivals including Cannes and Berlin. His follow up critically acclaimed short Heavy Metal Drummer was also nominated for a BAFTA.

Freddy wrote and directed the short films, Isla Traena and Capital which have both screened at the London Short Film Festival. He has written extensively for TV including three series of Bad Education, two series of Bounty Hunters and one series of Cockroaches. As well as episodes of Killing Eve and Sex Education.

Their current feature Old Boys is a wonderfully-staged comedy reworking of Cyrano de Bergerac’s classic story, set against the backdrop of a rough-and-tumble boarding school for boys. Check out the trailer.

Alex Lawther, critically acclaimed for his role as the young Alan Turing in the multi-award winning The Imitation Game, leads an impressive roster of talented young actors, including César and Lumière-nominated French actress, Pauline Étienne, rising star Jonah Hauer-King, Denis Ménochet and Joshua McGuire. The film was shot by the incredibly talented Nanu Segal (The Levelling).

this charmingly oddball rom-com exists somewhere between If.... and Rushmore. It’s the witty dissection of upper-class zealotry we need right now.” -Time Out

New Actor Competition:

On the night, we will also be revealing the details of our New Actors Competition. Come along to hear about the prizes including a headshots package and creative kit to make your own work.

**Please note that, because this is a free event, we over-subscribe tickets. Having a ticket, therefore, does not guarantee entry. Please arrive promptly to avoid disappointment.**
