Event description

Description

Led by a highly experience birding guide, this walking tour caters for birdwatchers of all abilities and is devoted to observing the superb wildlife that the wetlands attracts.

June to early July is breeding season for birds which means that not much movement of birds is occurring. However, the mixture of breeding habitat at Woodberry Wetlands – lagoons, reed-bed and woodland – means that a good variety of birds breed here, so there is plenty to see both in terms of species and courtship display. For example, last year saw the first recorded pair of rare black-necked grebes arrive at the reservoir to make an impressive display. Resident Mallard, Gadwall, Tufted Duck, Moorhen, Coots and Pochard are sure to be visible in good numbers and you should see Little and Great-crested grebes, Little Ringed Plover, Common Tern, Cormorant, Little Egret and Grey Heron on most days. Overhead, June is a good month for birds of prey and Swifts are permanently present. There are also many species breeding throughout the wooded and reed bed areas of the reserve with varieties of Tit, Warbler, Thrush, Reed Bunting, Wagtail and Finch families all notably present.

From mid-July wader passage season begins. This is the period when wading birds return south from their breeding grounds to find somewhere warm to spend the winter. As Woodberry Wetlands is on a known migration route following the watercourses of the Lea Valleymost of the July highlights will come in the form of wading birds.

The tour is led by a highly experienced guide with expert knowledge of the appearance, calls and behaviour of regularly seen birds as well as rare visitors to the area. Beginners will learn how to use optics equipment and the basics of what to listen and look out for. All participants will gain identification skills to enhance the enjoyment of the birding experience and gain in your ability.

The walk circumnavigates the reservoir to give views from all directions and takes place on a flat, easily navigable surface and at a comfortable pace to allow plenty of time for discussion and questions.

This event is suitable for ages 12+

Please note: No dogs are allowed at Woodberry Wetlands except guide dogs for the sight impaired.
