Abstract

The Interim People Plan outlines that the NHS will “need a transformed workforce with a more varied and richer skill mix, new types of roles and different ways of working…. this will mean supporting and enabling health professionals to work in new ways that make better use of the full range of their skills.” The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent NHS People Plan have highlighted the importance of this goal.

The strategic leadership of healthcare workforce is a complex and challenging arena. The production of workforce is at an industrial scale and yet the careful crafting of place based workforce to meet specific population health is essential.

The seminar will traverse the challenges and opportunities of 21st century healthcare workforce and look to future thinking of how we educate and train for modern services, with a modern workforce, working in modern teams. As integrated care systems take shape the opportunities abound to develop stronger links between NHS services and Universities in creative ways to drive staff training, development and retention from T level development through to advanced and consultant practice.
