Newly arrived pupils who are New to English require intensive and targeted English language support from their first day at school to ensure rapid progress. This practical webinar will focus on the actions that schools need to take during the first three weeks to best support their newly arrived pupils. It will explore what arrangements need to be in place for learners with EAL before the admission, before the pupil starts, in their first days and during the initial weeks. Dos and don’ts for practitioners during this period will also be discussed.

Staff working in schools with high mobility figures and ‘rolling’ admissions, particularly:

Biography:

Kamil Trzebiatowski joined The Bell Foundation in September 2018 and holds the post of Digital Resource Developer. Prior to joining the Foundation, Kamil spent 18 years teaching English as a Foreign Language and English as an Additional Language (Poland, England and Scotland) in mainstream secondary classrooms. He was an EAL co-ordinator at a secondary school as well as an EAL consultant/trainer (2014-2018). Kamil holds an MA in Corpus Linguistics and an MEd in Inclusive Education.

Catherine Brennan joined The Bell Foundation as EAL Trainer in August 2018. She also works as a Better Bilingual Senior Education Consultant in Bristol and surrounding areas, delivering training as an EAL Academy Associate as part of this role. Prior to joining the Foundation, Catherine worked as a primary class teacher, RE coordinator and EAL advisory teacher for 20 years in both London and Bristol local authorities. As well as a Psychology degree from the University of Nottingham and a primary PGCE from Birmingham City University, Catherine holds a Diploma in Bilingualism in Education from London Metropolitan University and a Postgraduate Certificate of Bilingualism in Education from the University of Birmingham.

We are aware that some participants are unable to attend the webinar on the day and as a result we over-issue tickets to ensure the session is full. Through our experience of hosting webinars we have calculated the likely drop out rate in order to have a full event, however, we do not want to disappoint people. Therefore, to be as fair as possible we admit ticket holders on a first come first served basis on the day. We will be most grateful if you would cancel your ticket if you know you will not be able to attend.
