Event description

Description

Modular content, structured journalism, atomised news, object based media - it goes by many names, and it’s one of the big developments revolutionising journalism right now.

Traditional ‘one-size-fits–all’ news programmes and articles are becoming less and less useful to digital audiences, immersed in a nearly limitless ocean of media choice. Manually producing different versions of the same story for every audience segment and for all consumption behaviours is not feasible – we need a very different approach. One alternative is to manage audio, video and text news as smaller, more focused units, each with a single editorial purpose and each carefully described by tags. Whether deconstructed from traditional programmes and articles, or created specifically for reuse, these ‘modules’ of news content can enable dynamic reconstruction of news experiences customised for different audiences in different circumstances. Modular content is a very different approach to news that could substantially improve the experience of news by audiences.

This is an opportunity to focus your thinking on this crucial technology in a shared environment by bringing your team to join other like minded people at the latest BBC #newsHACK.

Held in central London on 24 & 25 March 2020, the challenge will be to create your content and assemble an audience experience. You might be interested in slicing up linear broadcasts or finding the most appropriate parts of a written article. You might focus on adding appropriate metadata to your modules or on using that metadata to assemble unique experiences for different audiences.

Whatever your interest or speciality we will be looking for winners in three categories:

  • Best internal tool
  • Best audience facing experience
  • Surprise us!

So assemble your team and sign up for the event. We’d suggest your team is made up of mixed skills such as journalists, designers, software engineers and researchers. Whatever the skills mix, we do insist that each team is mixed gendered.
