Event description

Description

*This Event is open to News Organisations and Research Institutes*

Around the globe there are dozens of news rooms operating in multiple languages. The work required to track the success of stories across and in multiple languages, translate reports and cross-promote article for readers viewing in different languages is huge. How can machines free journalists to concentrate on the journalism itself?

BBC News Labs and Connected Studio invite you to join us at a #newsHACK to improve the work of multilingual newsroom. Possible challenges include:
  • How can we use the power of journalists working in many languages to improve the quality of journalism for everyone?
  • How might we efficiently summarise stories in different languages and enable cross promotion in multilingual markets?
  • How might we track the success of stories in different languages to ensure swift and effective translation and publishing to make sure that yesterday’s news isn’t being translated today?
  • How might we best use multilingual speech to text and synthetic voices?

This #newsHACK is a chance to work together with like-minded people to develop tools to give journalists new, more efficient and more exciting ways of working. Moving away from the format of traditional hacks we’ll be asking teams to think about challenges and topics beforehand. We’d like you to come to the day prepared to work together and regroup to solve common areas of interest. With a combination of facilitation, stress testing and expert speakers we will ensure that teams are best placed to spark and develop their ideas.

#newsHACKs give industry professionals, academics and developers a chance to collaborate and network in an environment of open innovation. At the end of the event participants will receive feedback on their proposals from a panel of industry expert judges.

Please ensure you register the names of all participants, and remember that if you’re part of a team it must be mix gendered. We’ll be encouraging people to mix into new teams at the event, so if you’re happy to do so then please get an “organisation ticket” for your group. If you want to remain in your team please register for a “team ticket”.

If you have any questions, please email us at connectedstudio@bbc.co.uk.
