About this Event

EVENT DATE CHANGE

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic with rising cases and ongoing uncertainty around travel restrictions, George and I have taken the difficult decision to reschedule the workshop again. The new data is Saturday June 5th 2021.

We will be monitoring the situation and hope the workshop will be able to take place on this new date in 2021. George and I look forward to welcoming you to Amsterdam. Meantime, stay safe and well.

INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED PROGRAMME WITH LEE SANKEY

I am delighted to be hosting this event and delivering a live version of two of my popular online courses.  The theme for the day will be improving your timing skills and your ability to play the harmonica unaccompanied. There will also be time to answer any specific queries you have.

Session 1: Timing Skills for Blues Harmonica Part 1

One of the key ingredients of harmonica greats like Little Walter, Kim Wilson, Sonny Boy Willamson is their timing skills. It goes to the heart of why their phrasing is so interesting, In the morning session we work on two primary themes. First learning to maintain structure and time, so crucial to making music. Second we’ll look at ways to make your improvisations more interesting thinking about time rather than purely using note choices.

Session 2: Timing Skills for Blues Harmonica Part 2

In the this session we’ll look at using target notes together. We’ll go through a series of exercises and phrases that will help improve your phrasing and timing accuracy.

Session 3: Country Blues Primer

Leveraging the learnings from sessions 1 and 2 we will take a look at playing country blues which relies on having a great sense of time. This is a style which brings out the best of the harmonica by combining rhythm, melody and effects. We will learn how to create a country rhythm and vary it with pushes and texture changes. Then using our timing skills, we’ll learn how to improvise within the rhythm without loosing the pulse or structure.

I look forward to playing some blues harmonica with you and helping you become a better player.

BEGINNERS WORKSHOP WITH GEORGE REIJNDERS

My workshop will focus on developing the core techniques to play blues harmonica. Things like tone, producing clean single notes and exploring the different types of sound effects the harp can make to add texture to blues songs. We’ll finish the day with performing two classic blues songs together.

Session 1: Mastering the Harmonica Basics

Playing single notes, chords and rhythms are basic techniques you want to master when learning to play the harmonica. So in the morning session we’ll start with looking at these “pillars”. First I'll give you an overview of the key techniques. Then we will look at going beyond playing clear single notes and how to make sounds characteristic of the blues using “dirty” notes, vibrato and warbles.

Session 2: Twelve Bar Blues Format and Grooves

In the 2nd session we’ll look at some Music Theory and Timing techniques. We’ll master the twelve bar blues chord progression, looking at playing in different harmonica positions and playing the basic blues rhythms. We will end this session by playing our first traditional Blues “You gotta move” with playing the melody line and the rhythmic part together.

Session 3: Practicing Blues Songs

Our last session is all about putting in practice what we’ve learned into two classic blues songs.  We’ll work our way through Little Walter's My Babe with a simplified melody line, and  Sonny Boy Williamson’s Bye Bye Bird where we can practice our single notes, tongue blocking technique and our blues rythmes and chord playing.

We’ll cover a lot of ground in this comprehensive workshop and you will leave with plenty of new ideas and things to practise!
