About this event

Join me, Fabien Butazzi (@fabienb — Gurushots Travel Photographer of the Year), at this Astrophotography workshop in London and learn how to capture a striking image of the full moon (or a Supermoon or a lunar eclipse, if we're lucky).

The full moon is a very powerful and energising time, and this can be a mindful moment for photographers too. Come to escape the hustle and bustle of the day and indulge in the peaceful energy of the moon.
It will be my pleasure to guide you on an exciting journey as you immerse yourself in Astrophotography. Feel the stress melt away as you soak in the moon's healing energy, or channel and vent your anger at the clouds when the weather doesn't cooperate.

Whether you’re a seasoned photographer or just starting out, this event promises inspiration, learning, and the chance to create beautiful images against the famous skyline of London.
Don’t miss this opportunity to hone your Astrophotography skills and capture the essence of the London nights!

Content:

  • Learn how to plan for the moment
  • Identify locations with interesting subjects for your perfect alignment
  • Tips&Tricks to shoot Astrophotography and Timelapse
  • Holy Grail, day-to-night timelapse (when relevant)
  • Master composition and framing to improve your photos
  • Editing and Postprocessing techniques to achieve the final photo of your dreams
  • Learn about the lunar events and the best times to capture the moon
  • Your host speaks English, Italian and French fluently (and is learning Spanish), so you can all join this event, even if you're only in London for a quick holiday!

The event is designed for a small group of participants, between 4 and 8. Having such a small number of participants allows me to better accommodate your requests and needs, as well as answer all your questions.
Also, shooting Astrophotography means we all occupy more ground with our tripods, and the space to take photos is often limited.

I believe in the power of exploring, learning, and connecting with others who share the same passions. Think of these events as mini-adventures that bring people together and let them see their surroundings in a whole new light, or moonlight in this case.

Note that the weather in the UK can be very unreliable. Therefore, even if the event starts with the best premises, we can still go back home disappointed. There is a good example of that at the end of my YouTube video here.

Necessary equipment:

  • Camera (any make or model), ideally with manual functions
  • Telephoto lens - as a bare minimum, 200mm (full frame equivalent).
I personally shoot with Fujifilm, so, to give you an idea, the 70-300mm, the 100-400mm, and the 150-600mm are all great choices with this system. Of course, you can always extend your lens with a teleconverter.
  • Fully charged batteries and empty memory card(s).
  • Tripod (sturdy enough to hold the weight of the telephoto lens)
  • Comfortable shoes and suitable clothing for the weather. Consider that temperatures may drop significantly, so bring an extra layer.

I would kindly ask those who own several pieces of equipment, to only choose and bring one tripod to the event.

Meeting Point: The location changes every month, according to the moon position.
Prior to the event, you will receive the exact location and time via email.

Here is an example of what could be achieved during such event (it's an old video, so please forgive the quality):

Of course, photos will vary with the seasons, with the moon getting close to other landmarks in London or allowing for spectacular compositions.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the event take place?

The location changes every month, according to the moon's alignment. I will study the best location for each event to make sure you can take the best photos. This also means that every event is different, so you may want to keep attending! :)

Do I need to bring anything?

The necessary gear is indicated in the description above. On top of that, I would recommend a bottle of water and perhaps a snack if you easily feel peckish; something to sit on, if you have difficulty standing for a long period; layered clothing to stay warm. Maybe a torch on your phone.

Will there be guests?

It is not unlikely to find some of the best astrophotographers taking photos from our same location, so this could be a chance for you to meet them too. We all go to the best locations after all ;)

Is the location wheelchair-friendly?

Some locations are, but it is not a guarantee for each event. If you have access needs of any sort, then please let me know by sending an email at meet@fabienb.blog before booking.

What happens if the weather is bad BEFORE the event?

This is an outdoor event. If the weather turns bad before the event (4 hours before the meeting time or more), your host will cancel the event and refund your booking (minus the Eventbrite fee, as this is out of the host's control).

What happens if the weather is bad DURING the event?

If the weather turns bad during the event (within 4 hours of the meeting time or while the event is running), your host will not cancel the event and no refund will be given but you will get a discount on the next event. You will still be able to learn about planning and photographing the full moon.

A note on cancellations on the day of the event (bad weather, see above)

Eventbrite only allows automatic refunds up to 1 day before the event. Therefore, all refunds following cancellations on the day due to adverse weather will be processed manually once the payouts from Eventbrite are received (3 to 5 working days).

Is there a suggested age for this event?

This event is suitable for anyone over 12 years of age. Under-16s must be accompanied by an adult chaperone. If the chaperone wants to take part in the activity too, they need to book their own spot. Adults cannot be accompanied by minors who do not take part in the activity.

How do I contact the organiser?

You can write at meet@fabienb.blog - I will also share my phone number, prior to the event.

Is there any insurance covering the event?

If you are worried that anything can happen to you or your gear, you should take the necessary precautions yourself and get your own insurance. While this event is considered very safe, neither the organisers nor Eventbrite will be liable for any unfortunate occurrence.
