Are you a beginner knitter who has mastered knit and purl stitches and would like to build on your knitting knowledge? Read on...

About this event

In the Next Steps in Knitting class we will work through a knitting pattern together, stopping at each section to discuss what information is being provided and how we can use this to make decisions in our knitting projects.

We explore how different types of yarns and needles can make a real difference to our knitting, and how to choose our yarn and make substitutions. We discuss gauge and why it is important and also learn to decipher knitting abbreviations!

Then we cast on the Diamond Lace purse and work through a range of techniques including: how to make left and right leaning increases, how to make a buttonhole and knitting a simple lace pattern.

The class is kept small (to a maximum of 6 people) so guided tuition and support is on hand throughout the class. It is ideal for those who are comfortable with knitting and purling or for those who want to build their knitting knowledge.

The class is taught using the English Style* of knitting and covers the following:

1) Reading a knitting pattern

- Sizes

- Yarns: Yarn weights, fibre content, reading a ball band

- Knitting tools: Needle types and materials

- Gauge

- Abbreviations

2) Casting on the Diamond Lace Purse

- Starting the project

- Introduction to lace stitches

3) How to block your knits for a professional finish

  • 60g / 2.1 oz, 110 yds / 100m Chunky or Aran Yarn.
  • 1 set of 4mm needles
  • A button, about 1” in diameter
  • 6 pins
  • A tapestry needle for sewing up the sides and weaving the ends in

*There are 2 main ways to knit – English and Continental. The English style is where the yarn is held in your right hand and ‘thrown’ around the needle to create a stitch. The Continental style is where the yarn is held in the left hand and the stitches are ‘picked’. All instructions and techniques in this class will be shown using the English style.
