About this event
This is another very popular class and needs to be booked early. Although it is designed to follow on from the ‘Introduction to Overlockers’ workshop, attendance at this is not essential. However, a basic working understanding of an overlocker is required.
In this class Molly will take you through more techniques you can do with your overlocker. These will include attaching elastic, gathering and making spaghetti straps and much, much more.
As with the introductory workshop, Molly will provide a comprehensive handout with instructions for all the samples you make.
You will go home with a folder full of samples and techniques to make so much more of your overlocker.
Skill level: Basic sewing machine skills required.
What to bring:
If you have scraps of fabrics left over from your sewing projects, please bring them as they can be used for making your samples. The aim of this workshop is to increase you knowledge of using a variety of fabrics. So if you have these already, that will do. Many of the samples use t-shirt material, so an old t.shirt will do.
But if you don’t have these
- 0.3 metres of light weight woven fabric
- 0.3 metres of t-shirt fabric
- 0.2 metres of fleece or jersey
- 0.2 metres of lace with 1 straight edge
- 0.2 metres of very light weight fabric, organza or chiffon, suitable of a scarf
- 0.3 metres of 1” elastic
Janome machines will be provided on the day along with a hot drink. You will also receive a 10% discount card to use in-store.

Tutor : Molly Brown
I have delivered workshops with Abakhan since 2017, but experimented, played and worked with textiles since childhood. This interest has remained an important part of my life, from making Christmas presents on my Nana’s old treadle machine; to teaching multiple skills at the Knitting & Stitching Shows, as well as Festival of Quilts.
After a 35 year career as an Occupational Therapist in the NHS, I changed direction in 2016 and focused more on teaching skills to others and working on my own projects.
I have mastered a wide repertoire of skills in both Knitting and Sewing. I teach a wide range of knitting techniques, from Entrelac to Magic Loop. But sewing is where my strongest passion lies. The back bone of this is in making clothes. However, I have a keen interest in exploring the variety of ways to embellish fabrics, especially by Shisha, free motion embroidery and Quilting. It might look like these are all just different tangled threads, but my aim is to bring it all together into a beautiful fabric of coherent and unique wearable art.
