Event description

Description

Dear citizen,

you are invited to lively conversations on how we can collectively reimagine International Non-Government Organisations (INGOs) as organisations of international solidarity, justice and compassion that are capable of addressing global inquality.

Without blame or finger pointing at individuals or organisations, let’s use our role as citizens to start conversations about what INGOs could look like and how they can be supported to transform into institutions that challenge the global systems that maintains inequality. I have written a blog on why we should ditch most of them and I am keen to explore what they could be.

You don't need experience or knowledge of NGOs. This conversation is for you if:

  • You support international development and NGOs but recognise that they are failing to address global inequality.

  • You are wondering how we can have changes that are far more profound than those which just focus on local initiatives – recognising the historical, political and economic systems that drive inequality

  • You recognise that most people who work in international development and NGOs are caring and passionate about making a difference to people’s lives. How can they be supported to be more radical?

We will start with a 20 minute presentation of what is wrong with current INGOs and why they are failing to address global inequality. We will then go into small groups to talk about the themes that are important to us. Then we will feedback our conversations and finish with a summary of the evening.

We will discuss what gives us hope, explore the deep cultural beliefs that lie beneath ‘development’ and share ways our struggles for equality and economic justice are connected to those in the global south.
