Overview:

Values Driven Innovation

The role of the designer has transformed over the last quarter century from designing innovative artefacts to devising systems, and services as wel as conceiving strategic and policy options for industry and the public sector. This has led to a corresponding evolution, if not a revolution in the capacities. knowledge and skills required to address a more ambitious agenda. In this talk we will explore the growing contribution of design to tackle complex systemic, even wicked problems, not only by design professionals but also by professionals and executives from other disciplines skilfully applying a designerly and values led approach to innovation. The issues of our time - climate change, the threats to biodiversity, social justice and the geopolitical crisis - demand innovative new approaches to the design of policy, governance and delivery. De Leon will argue that a values driven, interdisciplinary approach to innovation is required and illustrate this through examples of initiatives such as the Terra Carta Design Lab, conceived by His Majesty, King Charles III and Sir Jony Ive, and the UN and UNESCO supported Design for Good Alliance.
