Event description
Children’s responses to a school-based relationships programme tackling forms of harm and abuse.

About this Event

  • ‘It’s about my body and I need to know about that’: children’s responses to a school-based relationships programme tackling forms of harm and abuse.

Relationships Education became statutory within the primary school curriculum in England in September 2020. This recent development will increase demand for programmes currently delivered by outside organisations, which cover the range of topics relevant to relationships education. Although Relationships and Sex Education is a relatively well-established area of the curriculum in secondary schools, it is an innovative area of learning for primary schools and recent changes in policy now means there is a pressing need for evidence-based education in this area.

In this seminar, I will report on findings from a recent evaluation of a Healthy Relationships programme for primary school children covering a range of forms of abuse, conducted as part of my PhD research. In particular, I will focus on children’s responses to the content of a Healthy Relationships programme and how this can inform the development of the new Relationships Education curriculum in primary schools.

Dr Nicola Farrelly is a Research Associate within the Connect Centre, School of Social Work, Care and Community at UCLan, where she also recently completed her PhD. She has a longstanding interest in the needs and experiences of children who have lived with trauma, having previously worked as a residential support worker and subsequently as a researcher in the field of social work.
