About this event

Hobbies • Other

As part of this year's High Weald Wild About Dark Skies festival, join moth specialist Colin Piper, Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society Doug Edworthy, the Sussex Sidewalk Astronomers and the High Weald’s Dark Skies co-ordinator Samantha Nicholas for an informative and exciting after-dark walk exploring the star-lit life of the moth.

Kicking off at 7.00pm at a private site in Etchingham, we’ll be taking a torchlit walk through ancient woodland, scrub and open grassy areas, discussing the different species of moth that make these different habitats their home, and making the most of the location’s panoramic views of the sky to learn about the Northern Hemisphere's glorious autumn constellations. With the help of the Sussex Sidewalk Astronomers, we’ll then spend some time with telescopes getting up close and personal with our galaxy, before ending with hot soup and the chance to discuss everything we’ve learnt.

NB If weather is unsuitable, the event may be postponed.

Frequently asked questions

Is there parking on-site?

Yes, on hard standing, but spaces are limited - please try to car share if possible.

What is the full address of the venue?

The walk will be held on private land about a mile outside Etchingham village; we will be in touch with the full address and travel details shortly before the 16th.

Is the walk suitable for those with limited mobility or in wheelchairs?

Sadly no, as we will be walking over unlit, rough ground with obstacles such as tree stumps and anthills.

What refreshments will there be?

Vegetable soup and a scone, courtesy of Spicer Catering; we can't guarantee that these will be free from any allergens.

Who is running the walk?

Brightling Environment Group, with support from High Weald National Landscape.

Are dogs welcome?

As this is a ecologically sensitive site, we're afraid that dogs are not allowed.
