Event Details

We are pleased to invite you to the launch of NIHR Leeds Biomedical Research Centre (BRC). In April 2017 NIHR Leeds BRC, a partnership between Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) and the University of Leeds, commenced 5 year funding for the only dedicated musculoskeletal biomedical research centre in the UK and one of only twenty Biomedical Research Centres in the country.

NIHR Leeds BRC is a world leading centre for translational research into individually targeted, patient focussed therapies across musculoskeletal diseases. The centre brings together two leading University of Leeds research institutes, the Leeds Institute of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Medicine (LIRMM) and the Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (iMBE) with LTHT.

Musculoskeletal conditions are the single most common cause of chronic pain and disability and one of the most expensive to treat, estimated to affect 1 in 6 people in the UK. These include immune-mediated inflammatory disease (inflammatory arthritis and connective tissue diseases), and osteoarthritis (degenerative / mechanical arthritis). The vision for the NIHR Leeds Biomedical Research Centre is that through accurate phenotyping (biomarker and imaging based) and early intervention, we can develop and evaluate individually targeted, cost-effective therapies and therefore improve outcomes for musculoskeletal patients. Our long term goal is the early diagnosis and prevention of musculoskeletal disease and modulation of risk factors to improve outcome.

The launch will be an opportunity to hear about our current research and future direction, the national context of NIHR research and the opportunities of Leeds Biomedical Research Centre.

The Agenda for the event is as follows:

12:00   Reception and Drinks

12:15   Key note speaker presentations
