Event description

Description

Recent political events in Europe, the UK and USA have fuelled an increase in hate crime in Nottinghamshire and across the UK. These events and the media coverage linked to them has contributed to normalising hate speech and hate crime. The current trend in hate crime, if unchallenged, will divide our communities.

Join the hundreds of people from across Nottinghamshire who have already engaged with our 'No to Hate' Conferences and be inspired to make a difference to the people of Nottinghamshire.

The feedback from previous conferences has been incredibly powerful with delegates saying:

"The training was one of the most moving and thought provoking I have ever been on."

"This is one of the best training sessions I have attended, everyone can relate to this in their personal life, if not in their working life."

"A fantastic day which I wish I’d had 10 years ago."

Keynote speakers will examine the experiences of both victims and perpetrators of hate crime. This will include:

  • Sylvia Lancaster who will be sharing with us her work at the Sophie Lancaster Foundation, which focuses on creating respect for, and understanding subcultures in communities.

  • a former member of one of Britain’s right wing groups who will be relating his astonishing journey from hate crime perpetrator to educator and sharing the lessons of how those who are seemingly lost to a life of hate can turn their lives around.

There will also be ample opportunity for participants to look around the National Holocaust Centre and Museum including its internationally renowned exhibition ‘The Journey’. www.holocaust.org.uk

These training days are a chance to build on the No to Hate! pledge which many public service and other organisations across Nottinghamshire have signed up to. They are also designed to ensure that colleagues drawn from across all partnerships in Nottinghamshire and beyond are fully aware of their responsibilities and have an understanding of both hate crime victims and perpetrators. As such we are looking for a wide representation from all organisations that have a role to play in tackling hate crime to attend one of the sessions.

Registration and refreshments are available from 9am. The training begins at 9-30am.
