Non-Invasive Ventilation Course Chelsea and Westminster Hospital

THIS COURSE IS FOR INTERNAL STAFF ONLY - Please use your trust email when applying.

This course is primarily aimed at nurses who work in the Emergency departments, acute assessment medical units, coronary care and respiratory wards.

The course combines a pre-course learning workbook and face-to-face training. You will have access to the pre-course content at least one month prior to the study day.

The face-to-face course covers arterial blood gas interpretation, understanding the different types of non-invasive ventilation modes and high flow nasal cannula oxygen therapy. The course includes practical demonstrations on how to set-up a non-invasive ventilator (Trilogy) and AIRVO 2, as well as troubleshooting common problems and scenarios to complement the practical and theory elements.

Learning outcomes

  • The NIV course teaches the knowledge and skills required to understand different types of respiratory failure
  • Integrate respiratory physiology and respiratory diseases
  • Have a basic understanding of ABG’s
  • Set- up and trouble shoot the devices
  • Manage the patient on a NIV/HFNC device

Who is this course suitable for?

The NIV course is designed for healthcare professionals who would be expected to set up and manage patients who require non-invasive ventilation and high flow nasal cannula oxygen therapies (outside of ICU/HDU.

Appropriate participants include nurses working in acute care areas (e.g. ED, CCU, acute medical admissions units) and physiotherapists.
