About this event
- Event lasts 4 hours
England. 1824.
It's the event of the season- the Dashington Ball is the last chance for the beautiful young ladies of Habershire to fall in love (and their perservering mammas to secure the most eligible match) before all the suitable bachelors retire to their country estates for the summer. There are just three good matches left on the market- will you be able to secure a betrothel before the end of the season?
We join our two families in the week leading up to this ball as you scheme and manipulate your way to get the most perfect match and bring your "family" out on top.
Play the type of characters that captured your imagination in Austen’s books.
This is a game of Good Society. Create your own regency character, from a wealthy heir who falls in love with the aloof new arrival, to a charming socialite bent on ruining the reputation of their rivals. Exploit your advantages, connections, and family influence to achieve your secret desire – all while jealously guarding your good name. Not only that, players in Good Society hold the power to control the story itself, and change it in their favour. Take control of influential connections, create rumour and scandal, and spend tokens to orchestrate balls, carriage accidents, and even marriages. It is a game of balls, estates, sly glances, and turns about the garden. At least on the surface. Underneath this, just as in Austen’s own novels, it is a game of social ambition, family obligation and breathtaking, heart-stopping longing.
There are two types of tickets available:
Our player characters belong to one of our families. Old rivals in town, each family is obsessed with their own lineage and legacy. Whilst, as a character, you'll have your own motivations and goals, you'll also work with (or against) your family unit to achieve the most favourable outcomes for your line and hide your family secrets!
You can play anyone within this family (there are 4 players in each family) although there should be at least one eligible daughter (and preferably one not-so-eligible one!)
These tickets are set up to allow groups who wish to play together to do so but please do not feel you have to be in a pre-made group before signing up- just grab a ticket in either family!
And then there are our "Suitors". They are there to help facilitate our story. You'll straddle the line between Players and NPCs- Working with the DM to bring a compelling story together for the other characters. You'll be characters in your own right- with your own motivations, desires, secrets and ambitions- however these will be premade for you to some extent to allow for a compelling story and will be less of a focus for the game (rather we will be shining a light on our player characters).
Anyone is welcome to play as a suitor however you should be confident with roleplaying (as you will play a central role in the story), able to follow direction for storylines and willing to work collaboratively with the game master. If you have any questions about what this entails please contact: yorkdungeonsanddragons@gmail.com
No prior experience is necessary. All participants will be sent a quick start guide in advance explaining the rules of the system in an easy to learn format. Characters will be made in session.
Warning this game may include violence and other upsetting themes. Problematic issues may naturally arise as a result of playing a regency era game however they will be avoided wherever possible. If players seem fixated on a particular issue then they may be taken aside and the issue addressed. Out of character reference to these issues will be considered inappropriate and may result in your removal from the premises. If any issues would be particularly upsetting for you please let us know in advance so we can ensure to avoid those themes. A safeguarding system will be in place that players can use, without judgment, to pause and redirect play during the game.
