About this event
- Event lasts 1 hour 45 minutes
This guided tour will explore some of the private spaces of Eton College that are not usually accessible. Come and see a selection of Eton’s historic interiors and private gardens. Compare these spaces to Nora Davison’s painted views and discover how they have changed over the last century.
Watercolour artist Nora Davison (1855–1950) specialised in painting marine scenes before taking up residence above the old Post Office on the High Street in Eton in 1913.
She was in her late 50s and embarking on a new phase of her career, capitalising on local demand for views of the streets and buildings of Eton College. Her works sold mostly to Eton Masters, boys and their families, for whom she became ‘a familiar figure, sitting on her camp-stool, often with a cluster of boys looking on as she painted some Eton building’.
The tour covers:
- A 15 minute viewing of the exhibition, in the Verey Gallery
- School Yard
- College Library
- College Hall
- Fellows' Eyot and Luxmoore's Garden
- Gulliver's Passage and Jourdelay's boarding house garden
- Lower Chapel
