The Gliding Winch Launch

A glider is a type of aircraft designed to fly without the use of an engine. Gliders are launched into the air by several methods, one of the most exciting and dynamic being the winch launch. Here's how it works:

• Setup: A powerful winch is positioned at one end of the gliding field. This winch is connected to the glider by a long cable. The glider is positioned at the other end of the field, ready for takeoff.

• Launch: When everything is set, the winch operator begins to reel in the cable, rapidly pulling the glider across the ground. As the glider gains speed, the pilot lifts it off the ground using the controls.

• Ascent: The glider continues to ascend, almost like a kite, climbing at a steep angle. The climb continues until the cable is released, typically at heights of up to 1,000 to 2,000 feet, although this can vary based on the weather conditions on the day.

• Flight: Once the cable is released, This silent, engineless flight is a serene experience, offering stunning views of the East Anglian landscape below, and also offers you a chance to take controls if you feel comfortable to do so.

• Landing: Eventually, the glider returns to the field, where the pilot executes a graceful landing.

There will be lots of opportunity to chat and connect and view the facilities at Norfolk Gliding Club. Access to the cafe during the day for all the tasty treats you desire, additional items can be purchased Directly from the Cabin Cafe.
